What is blood pressure?


As your heart pumps blood in your body it moves against the sides of your blood vessels, supporting the circulation of energy and oxygen. The strength of your blood being pushed through your body is called blood pressure.

How is blood pressure measured? What is normal?


Blood pressure is measured in two numbers; your systolic and diastolic blood pressure levels.

Your systolic blood pressure is the top number on a reading and measures the highest level your blood pressure reaches when your heart beats. Your diastolic blood pressure is the bottom number on a reading and measures the lowest level your blood pressure reaches in between heart beats.

A normal blood pressure ranges between a systolic level (top number) of 120 mm Hg or below and a diastolic level (bottom number) of 80 mm Hg or below.

Why is it important to monitor your blood pressure?


If high blood pressure runs in your family or your blood pressure tends to run high, it is important to monitor your levels. More often than not, high blood pressure does not have symptoms, so regularly monitoring your levels is the safest way to ensure that high blood pressure is not silently causing you damage and threatening your health.

High blood pressure, or hypertension, is when your blood vessels are working harder and less efficient than they should be. Hypertension can cause damage to artery tissues and raise your risk of health conditions such as a heart failure, heart attack, stroke, kidney disease and more.

How can I monitor my blood pressure at home?


You can get your blood pressure checked at your doctor’s office, but if you have a history of high blood pressure or would like to monitor your levels on your own time, there are several ways to do so from home.

To manually check your blood pressure without using a machine, you will need to purchase a stethoscope, blood pressure cuff with a squeezable balloon and an aneroid monitor, which has a numbered dial to read measurements.

The easiest and most accurate way to check your blood pressure at home is to buy an automated arm or wrist monitor. When using an automated arm or wrist monitor, you should be sitting down with your legs uncrossed in an upright position, breathing regularly and relaxed. Following the instructions, you will place the cuff on your arm or wrist, depending on the type of monitor, and breathe normally as the cuff tightens to measure your blood pressure. Some monitors require you to manually inflate the cuff and others will do so automatically, in either case, the blood pressure monitor will come with a clear list of instructions for you to follow. After the process, the cuff will deflate from your arm or wrist and your blood pressure will be displayed on the screen of the monitor.

When should I see my primary care physician?


If your blood pressure is higher than usual or you have reason to believe you aren’t getting an accurate reading from your monitor, you should schedule an appointment with your primary care physician. In some cases, your primary care physician will refer you to a cardiologist who can help manage and treat your high blood pressure.

eVisits are a convenient, secure way to access Cleveland Clinic providers for seven common, minor ailments:

What are eVisits?

Cleveland Clinic MyChart eVisits are an easy way to access care for non-urgent issues from the comfort of home or while on-the-go, at any time that is convenient for you. Available through Cleveland Clinic MyChart website or mobile app, this feature enables you to quickly submit information regarding your health, and a caregiver can diagnose and prescribe if appropriate, without needing an appointment.

When should I use an eVisit?

An eVisit can only be used for non-urgent symptoms related to these minor illnesses:

Adults (ages 18+)

  • Adult pink eye/red eye
  • Back pain
  • Coughs
  • Diarrhea
  • Sinus issues
  • Urinary tract infections
  • Vaginal yeast infections

Pediatrics (ages 2-17)

  • Conjunctivitis (pink eye)
  • Lice
  • Upper respiratory infection (cold)

Who can submit an eVisit?

eVisits are available to patients age 2 and over who are currently located in the state of Ohio and have had a visit with a Cleveland Clinic provider in the last three years.
How does an eVisit work?

  • Log on to MyChart and answer a series of questions regarding your symptoms.
  • If you are completing an eVisit on behalf of your child, be sure to use your child's account. Learn more about adding your loved ones to your personal MyChart account.
  • A Cleveland Clinic provider will review your answers and respond with a diagnosis and treatment instructions within one business day.
  • If medication is prescribed, the prescription order will be sent directly to your preferred pharmacy. Please note that we are not able to prescribe controlled substances (such as opioids) through an eVisit.
  • All communication between you and your provider during an eVisit is saved in your medical record just like an in-office visit.

How much does an eVisit cost?

An eVisit for a common, minor health concern costs $20 and is not currently covered by insurance. The fee will be billed to you after the eVisit is complete.

Some Cleveland Clinic providers offer specialty follow-up eVisits, as an alternative to an office visit, for the management of the following conditions:

Can I activate MyChart for a loved one?

Yes you can. MyChart users that are parents or legal guardians of minor children (age 17 years and younger) can add their loved ones to their personal MyChart account to access portions of their child's medical records.

MyChart can also be used by caregivers with court-appointed guardianship of dependent adults to access portions of the medical record of their loved ones.

In addition, adults can provide legal authorization that will enable their family members or caregivers to manage their healthcare online through MyChart.

You will have the same convenient, 24-hour online access to medical information and health management services for your dependent loved one as you enjoy with your own MyChart account.

When I can see my recent test results?

Most test results are automatically released to MyChart. It may take several days or even weeks for certain tests to be completed and reported. If you feel that your test results should be available but you don't see them in MyChart, it is best to call the office of the provider who ordered the test(s).
